All the gear

I’ve wanted to take one of these gear photos since we decided we were walking. I looked at a gazillion different versions and became obsessed with organising my own gear list. Planning this thing has been just as enjoyable for me as what I hope the walk will be. Spreadsheet after spreadsheet of daily kms, food weights, pros and cons of one sleeping mat vs another. It’s been an utter joy.

We’ve tested the majority of our gear on tramping trips around NSW. Our Sea to Summit Alto tent is the standout winner of anything in our backpacks - it’s the only tent I’ve ever owned where drippings of condensation don’t wake you up in the morning.

I am very happy to admit we are now walking pole converts. These guys need a serious brand re-design because daggy old hikers they are not. I will never walk a day without them for my knees will cry and my hands will swell. Obsessed doesn’t come close.

The only things yet to prove themselves are our waterproofs. Despite Sydney having the wettest October on record, we managed to pick the only break in the rain to test our snazzy new ultralight rain jackets. I’m sure the NZ weather will soon prove how solid those waterproof ratings are…

How all our gear fits in our backpacks is beyond me. We’re at just over 8kg each which isn’t the lightest but it’s certainly not the heaviest i’ve seen either. Plenty of room in our packs for food, just as soon as Josh learns how to pack it properly…
